We live an area that has limited sun exposure. The current research is clear that Vitamin D plays a large role in our immune function, decreasing inflammation and in general protecting us from a host of diseases and disease process. We need to supplement our bodies to receive the best benefits we can from Vitamin D.
How much do I need? That is a good question. The current accepted level is 37ng/dl. That is the amount that is recommended so we don't get Rickets. That is not a problem currently. However, the recommended allowances have not been updated to produce the best benefits for the body. Current literature shows that the optimal levels are between 60-80 ng/dl for the most protection. I personally try to stay around 70-75 ng/dl.
It is important to remember that before you start Vitamin D supplementation, blood testing is essential to determine your levels so you can properly gauge the daily amounts needed to achieve and maintain optimal levels.
