Whiplash is a soft tissue injury to the neck, also known as neck sprain or neck strain. It is characterized by a collection of symptoms that occur following damage to the neck, usually because of sudden hyperflexion/hyperextension movement of the neck and associated structures. Whiplash commonly occurs as the result of an automobile accident and may include injury to the intervertebral joints, discs, ligaments, cervical muscles and nerve roots. Symptoms such as neck pain may be present directly after the injury or may be delayed for several days or weeks in some cases. In addition to neck pain, other symptoms may include neck stiffness, injuries to the muscles and ligaments(myofascial injuries), headache, dizziness, abnormal sensations such as burning or prickling(paresthesias), or shoulder and/or back pain. In addition, some people experience cognitive, somatic or psychological conditions such as memory loss, concentration impairment, nervousness/irritability, sleep disturbances, fatigue or depression.
Traditional medical treatments for whiplash following an automobile injury may include pain medications, non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs(NSAID's), anti-depressants, muscle relaxants and a cervical collar. While these treatments may provide relief of symptoms, they DO NOTHING to address the damage that occurs in EVERY INDIVIDUAL that gets whiplash following an automobile accident.
Active rehabilitative therapies to repair and stabilize the damaged soft tissues are ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL to avoid future complications from the damage caused by whiplash following an automobile accident.
